Cake ...

So, today as I was walking I thought about the phrase 'you can't have your cake and eat it to'. That doesn't make sense to me at all really. I mean, who would want to have a cake and not eat it? Why else would you even want to have cake, if not to eat it? I just don't understand. That is kind of a stupid phrase personally.
